Choong Jia Shun

Counsel

Jia Shun’s practice focuses on complex commercial disputes, and insolvency matters. He believes that no one should have to face legal crises alone, or lose their voice when their life’s work is on the line. Clients appreciate that he listens deeply to their concerns and works with them to strategise and take steady steps forward. Jia Shun is a proponent of resolving disputes via alternate means, and is experienced in doing so by way of mediation and settlement negotiations.

Prior to joining Covenant Chambers, Jia Shun was trained at a boutique dispute resolution firm that specialised in urgent interim injunctions, high stakes, high value disputes, and insolvency matters. He has also served as in-house counsel at the Ministry of Defence and a fintech think tank.

Sample Cases

International Arbitration

  • Defended a regional electronic payment services provider in a shareholders’ dispute before the SIAC. The value of the claims in this case was more than USD 100 million. Related Singapore Court proceedings are reported in CXG and another v CXI and 2 others [2023] SGHC 244.

  • Obtained an SIAC award for a Swiss blockchain game developer against a Chinese cryptocurrency exchange in a token-listing dispute.

  • Acted for and advised an SIAC award creditor in applying to enforce their award against a Russian state-owned bank.

Civil/ Commercial Litigation

  • Acted for and advised a creditor in applying to wind up the trustee-manager of a Singapore-based Chinese business trust. Related Singapore Court proceedings are reported in Re Dasin Retail Trust Management Pte Ltd [2025] SGHC 6.

  • Successfully resisted a co-founder’s application to wind up a global cryptocurrency investment company on just and equitable grounds.

  • Applied to set aside freezing orders obtained against ultra-high net worth individuals and related Hong Kong companies. The sums frozen were more than USD 45 million.

  • Obtained and executed search orders against a testing laboratory’s former employees who had taken proprietary information and set up a competing business.

  • Acted for and advised the Singapore subsidiary of an American healthcare AI developer in relation to investigations and prosecution by the Ministry of Manpower and the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore.

Insolvency

  • Acted for and advised the Singapore liquidators of a Korean e-commerce platform on local and cross-border asset recovery and strategy. The value of the creditors’ claims in this case was close to SGD 200 million.

  • Obtained a winding-up order against a regional snack distribution company despite a contributory’s opposition to the same.
